Wns prize for contribution to the protection of human rights in Nepal

Leading Nepalese social activist and this year’s Tji Hak-soon Justice and Peace Award-winner, Arjun Karki accepted his prize yesterday at a special presentation ceremony in Seoul, Korea.

Karki, who is chairman of Rural Reconstruction Nepal (RRN), received a medal and a US$10,000 cash prize from Tji Hak-soon Justice and Peace Foundation chairman, Monsignor Philip Kim Byeong-sang.

The foundation said Karki won the prize for his contribution to the protection of human rights and the development of impoverished and marginalized communities in Nepal.

UNITED NATIONS, Feb 5, 2011 (IPS) - Maximising time, energy and resources toward improving living conditions for millions of people in the poorest countries of the world - the so-called Least Developed Countries (LDCs) - means that the "business-as-usual" approach must yield to a holistic strategy, says Arjun Karki, a longtime expert on grassroots, democratic peace-building and development.

With an eye on the upcoming Fourth U.N. Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC IV) in May, Karki underscores that unless there is a decisive shift, the world is heading toward "another unproductive decade" in terms of LDC policy- making.

Dr. Arjun Karki, President of Rural Reconstruction Nepal (RRN) and International Coordinator of LDC Watch has been awarded the '14th Justice and Peace Award 2011' by the Bishop Tji Hak-Soon Justice and Peace Foundation based in S. Korea for his exceptional contribution for the protection of the human rights and the development of impoverished and marginalized communities in Nepal and in other LDCs.

LDC Watch for 'new deal’ to address global poverty

BSS, Dhaka

In the global fight against poverty, the international community should move towards working out a 'new deal' to make aid architecture to LDCs more people centric to promote inclusive development under country specific development programme.

President of LDC Watch Dr Arjun Kumar Kirki told BSS on Thursday of the need for reforming the global aid system to build it on a more coordinated approach from donors and recipients sides to make development assistance bringing sustainable development to poorer nations.
